2009:
30 May 2009: 4th annual R. Andrew Helgeson Memorial Blair Alumni Lacrosse Game, to raise funds for SCA research and awareness.
25 May 2009: established through the Marylan Govenor's office a Maryland SCA Awareness Day.
22 March 2009: Exhibited at Health Fair at Greater Washington JCC.
January 2009: Participated in programs concerning AED placements, AED/CPR training programs, the legislative process nad parent grief counseling (Orlando, FL)
Testified before the Maryland House of Delegates: simplification of the Good Samaritan laws in Maryland as they relate to the use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) to alleviate the potential liability of facilities providing AEDs.
2008:
Participated in free heart screenings for children on January 17, 2008 in Seattle, Washington. 280+ people were screened. We supported the effort by completing health questionnaires, recording data and helping where needed.
Provided assistance at a Continuing Medical Education (CME) event on January 18, 2008 in Seattle, Washington. The theme of the CME was sudden cardiac arrest in young people and athletes. We discussed the subject with the doctors and other health professionals in attendance and encouraged them to pursue greater exposure of the issue within their profession.
Established through the Maryland Governor’s office a Maryland SCA Awareness Day which was May 25, 2008.
Had fundraiser, 3rd Annual R. Andrew Helgeson Memorial Blair Alumni Lacrosse Game, to raise funds for SCA research and awareness on June 6, 2008
Testified before the Maryland General Assembly and had numerous discussions with elected officials about simplifying the Good Samaritan laws in Maryland as they relate to the use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) to alleviate the potential liability of people using AEDs. This effort led to the passage and signing on May 22, 2008 of SB579/HB1134 by Governor O’Malley. We have also been working to expand "Andrew’s Law," which mandates the placement of AEDs in all Maryland high schools, to cover other schools and facilities. These efforts took place during the 2008 General Assembly period which runs from January - April. The RAH Foundation also supported an effort to mandate AEDs at public swimming pools.
